Prepare to be amazed by the incredible diversity of plant species unique to the southern tip of Africa – it’s truly unrivalled!

You’ll have several hours to explore both the meticulously manicured formal areas and the wild, natural habitats on Table Mountain’s slopes. Keep your eyes peeled for some of the area’s star avian residents: the charismatic Cape Sugarbird, the vibrant Orange-breasted Sunbird, the elusive Cape Batis, the melodious Forest Canary, the striking African Paradise Flycatcher, the mysterious Spotted Eagle-owl, and the majestic Forest Buzzard.

After a relaxing picnic lunch on the lush garden lawns, we’ll journey to the historic Groot Constantia wine estate, established in 1685. West Coast National Park via Darling Hills:

We’ll start our birding trip by heading north from Cape Town along the West Coast. Our main stop is West Coast National Park, about an hour’s drive from the city. This area is known for its beautiful scenery and diverse birdlife.

We’ll start the day at Blaauwberg Beach, where you’ll be treated to iconic views of Table Mountain. Keep your binoculars handy as we search for the White-fronted Plover and the endemic Cape and Crowned Cormorants.

As we wind through the picturesque Darling Hills, we’ll be on the lookout for some of the area’s star residents: the Southern Black Korhaan, African Pied Starling, and Capped Wheatear, among others.

In August and September, the West Coast is covered in wildflowers. This natural display is so impressive that it’s often called one of the world’s natural wonders.

Once in the park, we’ll explore two bird hides and make our way to the lagoon for a scenic picnic lunch. This watery haven supports a diverse array of Palearctic waders and water birds, including both Lesser and Greater Flamingos. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for the endemic Black Harrier, a beautiful raptor with a localised distribution. This park offers one of the best chances to spot this magnificent bird.

At the coast, our tour continues as we search for the African Black Oystercatcher and the trio of endemic cormorants: Cape, Bank, and Crowned.

The park isn’t just for bird enthusiasts, though! You might spot some of Africa’s iconic mammals, including the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra, Bontebok, and Eland. And don’t be surprised if you see Ostriches strutting about – they’re relatively common here.

Key target species include:

  • Black Harrier
  • Southern Black Korhaan
  • Ostrich
  • Southern Large-billed Lark
  • African Black Oystercatcher
  • African Pied Starling
  • Grey-winged Francolin
  • Crowned Cormorant
