I have been a birder my whole life. Growing up in the UK’s beautiful countryside, one of my fondest memories as a child was sitting in my grandparents’ garden watching the bird feeder, as tits, robins, finches, and, if lucky, something even more exciting might make an appearance, such as a woodpecker or a Nuthatch. Life went on, and I went through my teens not really thinking about birds, to be honest – I perhaps had other things on my mind!
But in my twenties, that all changed. I went to Africa. The sheer boldness and density of species to be seen daily were somewhat of a revelation. It was almost as if a light bulb went on in my head – I was obsessed. I was in love. I was happy! Wild (or exotic) birding was for me and I’ve never looked back since.
So, in 2016, I set up my first company, The Sustainable Birding Company. The aim was to be the number one birding tour company in Kenya. From my own personal experience going on birding tours around the world, I quickly realised there was a hole in the market for superb, well-crafted birding tours. Not only did I want to offer excellent birding tours, but I also wanted to aid in the conservation of bird species and allow people to travel responsibly by offsetting their carbon footprint and contributing to local communities. So, I had an aim – birding tours – and it went well. So well, in fact, that we branched out into Uganda, then Tanzania, until eventually we started organising tours all across the continent.
In 2024, we changed to Wild Birding. Having wild in the company name just seemed fitting, as most of birding tours are in some of the most incredible and beautifully wild regions on Earth!
I’m so proud to have a fantastic team behind me at Wild Birding. We’re dedicated to showcasing our experiences and passions through our tours. We’re all bird and nature lovers, and each one of our tours has had first-hand experience by one of us. Not one of our tours is the same and all hold sustainable practices. We’re all about personalising each trip, catered to the individual. From photography tours to planning incredible memorable family holidays, that’s what makes us happy. There’s something innately instinctive about wanting to show others what you have seen on your travels, and that’s what we’re all about. To travel is to live. And if birds and wildlife are involved, all the better.
Lastly, one thing you’ll quickly learn about me is the profound love I hold for East Africa, having been my home for 15 years and where I’ve built a family home in the stunning Lake Naivasha, where the birdlife is prolific and we get daily visits from giraffes, zebras, and warthogs (and the occasional leopard). However, I feel equally at home in the cloud forests of Peru or while exploring the Australian outback. I am eager to get to know you, so feel free to give me a call or send an email, and let’s discuss birding destinations!
