The Gambia Birding Tours
The Gambia is the smallest country in continental Africa, but is packed with incredible diversity, allowing for a huge count of species within a short time, making the birding really special. It’s also only a five-hour flight away from Europe.
The Gambia offers incredible birding, courtesy of its sublime bird diversity and proximity to Europe. With over 462 recorded species, this small nation lies at the intersection of semi-arid and tropical rainforest zones, attracting birds from both habitats. Its strategic location near the northern tropics also draws numerous European migrants, either passing through or overwintering. With its unique position bordering rainforests and deserts, rare vagrants are always a possibility. The pleasant climate, aside from brief hot spells, further enhances the experience. However, The Gambia’s greatest asset may be its welcoming locals, whose friendliness and helpfulness delight visitors. Just a 5-hour flight from Europe, this birding paradise offers an accessible taste of West African specials.

When to visit
The Gambia is fantastic for birding all year-round. However, the absolute prime birding season spans from November through March, coinciding with the ‘high’ and dry period that typically persists until May. November offers the most favourable conditions for spotting the elusive Egyptian Plover, whose presence hinges on optimal water levels. While the weather remains characteristically warm, with March and April experiencing peak temperatures, the months of December and January provide a slight respite from the tropical heat. This seasonal window not only yields an influx of migratory species but also has the many resident species in their breeding plumage, creating a good photo opportunities and generally nice sightings. The confluence of these climatic factors transforms The Gambia into a birding paradise during this peak period and is such a joy.
Weather & Climate
The Gambia experiences a subtropical climate characterized by distinct dry and rainy seasons, largely influenced by its West African location surrounded by Senegal and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.
The dry season spans from November to May. This period is further divided into two parts: the ‘high’ dry season from November to April, and the ‘low’ dry season in May. The ‘high’ dry season brings warm temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 35°C (95°F), clear skies, and low humidity levels. However, the ‘low’ dry season in May can be exceptionally hot, with average temperatures around 38°C (100°F) and high humidity.
From December to February, the Harmattan, a dry and dusty wind blowing in from the Sahara Desert, brings hazy conditions to the region. This contrasts with the rainy season, which lasts from June to October. Influenced by humid monsoon winds from the Atlantic Ocean, this period sees the highest rainfall levels, with an average of 400-600 mm (16-24 inches) of precipitation, particularly from July to September.
During the rainy season, temperatures are generally lower, averaging between 27°C (81°F) and 32°C (90°F). However, humidity levels can reach up to 90% or more, making the atmosphere quite muggy. Overall, The Gambia enjoys a warm and sunny climate throughout the year, with the dry season being the most popular time for tourism and outdoor activities due to the more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity levels.
