When to visit

The Gambia is fantastic for birding all year-round. However, the absolute prime birding season spans from November through March, coinciding with the ‘high’ and dry period that typically persists until May. November offers the most favourable conditions for spotting the elusive Egyptian Plover, whose presence hinges on optimal water levels. While the weather remains characteristically warm, with March and April experiencing peak temperatures, the months of December and January provide a slight respite from the tropical heat. This seasonal window not only yields an influx of migratory species but also has the many resident species in their breeding plumage, creating a good photo opportunities and generally nice sightings. The confluence of these climatic factors transforms The Gambia into a birding paradise during this peak period and is such a joy. 

Weather & Climate

The Gambia experiences a subtropical climate characterized by distinct dry and rainy seasons, largely influenced by its West African location surrounded by Senegal and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

 

The dry season spans from November to May. This period is further divided into two parts: the ‘high’ dry season from November to April, and the ‘low’ dry season in May. The ‘high’ dry season brings warm temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 35°C (95°F), clear skies, and low humidity levels. However, the ‘low’ dry season in May can be exceptionally hot, with average temperatures around 38°C (100°F) and high humidity.

 

From December to February, the Harmattan, a dry and dusty wind blowing in from the Sahara Desert, brings hazy conditions to the region. This contrasts with the rainy season, which lasts from June to October. Influenced by humid monsoon winds from the Atlantic Ocean, this period sees the highest rainfall levels, with an average of 400-600 mm (16-24 inches) of precipitation, particularly from July to September.

 

During the rainy season, temperatures are generally lower, averaging between 27°C (81°F) and 32°C (90°F). However, humidity levels can reach up to 90% or more, making the atmosphere quite muggy. Overall, The Gambia enjoys a warm and sunny climate throughout the year, with the dry season being the most popular time for tourism and outdoor activities due to the more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity levels.
