Checklist birdwatching tours

    When to visit

The optimal period for birdwatching in Ethiopia is from November to March, aligning with the arrival of Palearctic migrant birds during the dry season, making it an exceptional time. From April to September, birdwatching continues to be favourable as resident birds enter their breeding plumage, becoming more vocal, easier to spot, and visually striking. However, the heavy rainfall in July and August may impact sightings.

    Sustainability & Citizen Science

At Wild Birding, we are committed to ensuring that every birding holiday we create has a positive impact on both bird conservation efforts and the local communities in the areas we visit. As a demonstration of this commitment, we have developed a carbon scoring and offsetting framework specifically designed for tailor-made holidays.

We encourage our clients to request a carbon score for their individual trips, allowing them to understand and mitigate the environmental impact of their travel. By offering this service, we aim to promote sustainable tourism practices and raise awareness about the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.

Our dedication to responsible ecotourism has been recognised through several prestigious ecotourism awards, further validating our approach to sustainable birding adventures.

When you choose Wild Birding for your Ethiopia birding holiday, you can be confident that your journey will not only be an unforgettable experience but also one that contributes to the protection of Ethiopian’s incredible birdlife and supports the well-being of local communities.

    What to bring with you?

In Ethiopia’s temperate climate, selecting the right attire is essential. Opt for light-coloured shorts, trousers, and shirts for comfort during the day. Prepare for cooler evenings, especially in the Rift Valley areas where temperatures can plummet to around 5 degrees Celsius – it’s wise to pack a jacket.

To ward off mosquitoes, be sure to pack effective repellent, and consider taking anti-malarial medication as a precaution.

For birdwatching, essential gear includes top-notch binoculars. If you’re equipped with a reliable camera and lens, don’t forget to bring them along! A comprehensive bird guide tailored to Ethiopia’s avian species, such as “Birds of the Horn of Africa” by Nigel Redman, Terry Stevenson & John Fanshawe, would greatly enhance your experience.
