Malawi Birding Tours

One Africa's Best Kept Birding Secrets

Malawi Birding Tours

With over 600 species within a relatively small land area, beautiful Malawi allows you to gain a huge count of species in a short time period. With one endemic and some of the best Miombe Woodland birding in Africa, Malawi should not be overlooked.

Situated in south-eastern Africa, Malawi shares its borders with Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. The mighty and outstandingly beautiful Lake Malawi, dominates much of the eastern boundary and marks one of the southernmost points of the Great Rift Valley. Despite being overshadowed by other destinations, our Malawi birding tours have an ace up its sleeve, with the true endemic and well sought-after Yellow-throated Apalis.

Our birding tours in Malawi specifically target numerous rare and localised species unique to this southeastern African region, many of which are scarcely encountered beyond Malawi’s borders.

Malawi never disappoints and allows a large count of species in a short time period. We couldn’t rate Malawi high enough!

When to visit

In Malawi, birding is fantastic year-round, with 80% of its 633 bird species residing within the country, ensuring a fulfilling experience regardless of the season. However, to nitpick, the best time to go on one of our Malawi birding tours, spans from the end of the dry season (around October) to the end of the rainy season (around April) stands as the preferred window. During this time, the arrival of migratory birds from Europe and North Africa enhances the diversity of species. Particularly, November to December is a lovely time to visit as many species will be displaying their beautiful breeding plumages.

Weather & Climate

Malawi’s climate showcases a blend of tropical and subtropical influences, resulting in varied weather patterns throughout the country. Generally, the nation experiences a predominantly subtropical climate characterised by three distinct seasons.

The dry season extends from May to October, featuring clear skies, minimal rainfall, and cooler temperatures. This period is optimal for wildlife viewing and trekking, particularly in the cooler highland areas, while the lower regions often display parched landscapes.

From November to April, Malawi enters its wet season, characterised by higher temperatures and significant rainfall. The landscape flourishes into lush greenery as the countryside blooms, attracting migratory birds and offering excellent birdwatching opportunities. However, accessing certain areas may become challenging due to heavy rains and flooding, impacting travel and outdoor activities.

The transitional months of April and November can experience unpredictable weather shifts as the seasons transition, making it a less predictable time.

What to bring with you on a Malawi Birding Tour

Preparing for a birding tour in Malawi requires packing essentials tailored to its diverse landscapes and varying weather conditions. Begin with lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm temperatures prevalent in most regions. Sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes are essential for walking in diverse terrains, from rugged trails to wetlands, providing stability and support during birdwatching activities. Additionally, a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho proves invaluable during the rainy season when unexpected showers might occur.

Equipment such as high-quality binoculars tailored for birdwatching is essential and if you have a good working camera and lens, then please bring it with you! A comprehensive field guide specific to the country’s birds, such as Field Guide to Birds of Greater Southern Africa would be recommended.

Sustainability

At Wild Birding, we are committed to ensuring that every birding holiday we create has a positive impact on both bird conservation efforts and the local communities in the areas we visit. As a demonstration of this commitment, we have developed a carbon scoring and offsetting framework specifically designed for tailor-made holidays.

We encourage our clients to request a carbon score for their individual trips, allowing them to understand and mitigate the environmental impact of their travel. By offering this service, we aim to promote sustainable tourism practices and raise awareness about the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.

Our dedication to responsible ecotourism has been recognised through several prestigious ecotourism awards, further validating our approach to sustainable birding adventures.

When you choose Wild Birding for your Malawi birding tour, you can be confident that your journey will not only be an unforgettable experience but also one that contributes to the protection of Malawi’s incredible birdlife and supports the well-being of local communities.
