    When to visit

The best time for birdwatching in Morocco is from late April to mid-May. During this period, the temperatures are ideal, offering a comfortable climate for enthusiasts. This timeframe also coincides with the presence of all the key species, including the Atlas Flycatcher, which arrives later in the season.

This period aligns with the spring season, a crucial time for birders aiming to see a wide variety of species. Migratory birds are abundant, and many resident birds are engaged in breeding activities. The late-arriving Atlas Flycatcher is more likely to be spotted during this window, enriching the overall birdwatching experience.

    Weather & Climate

Morocco’s weather and climate are as diverse as its geography, ranging from the Mediterranean coast to the rugged Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara Desert. Along the northern coast, the climate is typically Mediterranean, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Cities like Tangier and Rabat experience average summer temperatures around 28°C (82°F) and winter temperatures rarely dipping below 8°C (46°F). Rainfall is moderate, mainly occurring between October and April.

Inland, the climate varies significantly. The Atlas Mountains, stretching across the centre of the country, create a barrier that influences weather patterns. Higher elevations experience cooler temperatures and significant snowfall in winter, making it a popular destination for winter sports. For example, areas like Ifrane can see winter temperatures plummet to -10°C (14°F) and heavy snowfall, contrasting with summer highs of around 25°C (77°F).

To the south, the climate transitions to arid and semi-arid as one approaches the Sahara Desert. Here, conditions are extreme, with scorching summer temperatures that can exceed 45°C (113°F) and minimal rainfall throughout the year. Nights can be cold, especially in winter, with temperatures occasionally dropping below freezing. Cities like Marrakech, on the edge of the desert, experience hot summers with temperatures often reaching 40°C (104°F) and milder winters with average lows around 6°C (43°F).

Overall, Morocco’s climate is influenced by its varied topography, with coastal regions enjoying moderate conditions, mountainous areas experiencing cooler climates with snow, and desert regions enduring extreme heat and aridity.

What to bring with you on a Morocco Birding Tour

When embarking on one of our birding tours in Morocco, packing the right essentials is key to ensuring a comfortable and rewarding experience. Given the diverse climates, from coastal regions to mountainous areas, lightweight and breathable clothing is crucial. A hat and sunglasses are recommended to provide protection from the sun, while sturdy, comfortable footwear is essential for navigating varied terrains during our excursions. Considering the variability in temperatures, especially in the evenings or at higher altitudes, a light jacket or layers can be very useful. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also important for sun protection and to ward off insects. For equipment, high-quality binoculars tailored for birdwatching are indispensable. Additionally, if you have a good camera and lens, bring them along to capture the stunning birdlife. A comprehensive field guide specific to the country’s birds, such as ‘Birds of Morocco’ is also highly recommended to enhance your birdwatching experience.
