Wild India: Best Of Central India Birding Tour

per person

This birding tour explores three spectacular parks of the incredible Indian Central Highlands – Tadoba, Satpura, and Pench National Parks – each offering their own unique habitats, avifauna and rich wildlife.

Tadoba’s teak and bamboo forests host a variety of woodland specials with sough-after targets such as the Indian Pitta. Satpura, with its diverse landscape, is a haven for migratory waterfowl and raptors, whilst also supporting a rich variety of forest birds with both the Grey and Red Junglefowls, Racket-tailed Drongo, Savanna Nightjar and Grey-headed Fish Eagle being a highlight. Then Pench’s teak forests are home to numerous targets such as the Indian Silverbill, Black-headed Bunting, Chestunt-shouldered Pitonia among others.

This exciting tour provides varied birding experiences: jeep safaris in Tadoba and Pench allow coverage of large areas to spot a wide range of species, whilst Satpura offers the unique opportunity to bird by foot, boat, and jeep. This combination provides excellent chances to observe birds in different habitats and at varying distances. From waders at the water’s edge to canopy-dwelling songbirds, the trip promises a comprehensive birding experience with the potential to spot over 300 species. Whilst the focus is on birds, you’ll also have opportunities to observe diverse wildlife, including the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger.

Best time of year to visit:

All year round! But generally speaking, the most favourable period is from October to April.

The winter months, from November to February, are particularly excellent for birding. During this time, the parks receive numerous migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Europe, significantly increasing the diversity of species you can observe. The weather is also more comfortable for outdoor activities, with cooler temperatures and lower humidity. This period is ideal for spotting winter visitors like the Bar-headed Goose in Satpura or the Indian Pitta in Tadoba.

March and April, while warmer, can be rewarding for bird enthusiasts. As water sources begin to dry up, birds tend to concentrate around remaining water bodies, making them easier to spot. This is also the breeding season for many resident species, so you’re likely to witness interesting breeding behaviours and plumages. The deciduous forests start to shed their leaves, improving visibility for birding.
