Wild Botswana: Family Birding & Wildlife in the Okavango Delta

per person

One of our most family-friendly itineraries to date, this 7-day safari focuses on two contrasting areas of the Okavango Delta, offering a rich mix of wildlife viewing and relaxed birding.

This 7-day itinerary has been put together with families in mind — particularly those looking to enjoy birds and wildlife in a calm, unhurried way. It’s ideal for first-time safaris or anyone travelling with children who want to be part of the experience, rather than sitting things out.

The focus is on comfort, flexibility, and quality guiding — with two excellent camps in the Okavango Delta that are not only well located, but also genuinely welcoming to younger travellers. The result is a slower-paced trip that still delivers plenty of birding and big game, just without the pressure or complexity.

Tour overview

You’ll begin with three nights at Delta Camp, set on a small island near Chief’s Island. This is one of the very few places in Botswana where children under 12 can join both mokoro excursions and guided bush walks — making it ideal for those wanting a more active, inclusive experience.

The birding here is gentle and close at hand. Expect African Jacana and Malachite Kingfisher from the deck, with African Pygmy Goose, Little Bee-eater and Coppery-tailed Coucal commonly seen on guided outings. The local guides are excellent and know how to keep things engaging without overwhelming younger guests.

After Delta Camp, you’ll fly across the Delta to Gomoti Plains Camp, set in a private concession where the focus shifts to classic safari. Here, you’ll explore by 4×4 — with access to both day and night game drives — and a chance to see lion, elephant, giraffe and even wild dogs. The guiding remains flexible, and the camp is known for being friendly, low-key, and suitable for families.

Birding becomes more varied at Gomoti, with raptors, rollers, hornbills and wetland species across the concession. Guides are based in the area and have an excellent eye for the region’s birdlife.

Bird count:

250–300+ species, including floodplain specialists, woodland targets, and Delta specials.

Pace:

Slow – Short transfers by air and no long drives. Activities are easy-going and well spaced.

Difficulty:

Easy – Most walks are gentle, mokoros are stable, and everything is adapted to your comfort level. Suitable for all ages.

Sustainability & Citizen Science:

We work only with small, low-impact camps that actively support conservation and local communities. Park fees and conservation levies are included, and your trip can be carbon scored and offset on request.

At Wild Birding, we also encourage every guest to contribute to citizen science by logging sightings on eBird — helping build valuable long-term data for bird populations across Africa.

Price:

As with all our tailor-made tours, pricing depends on the season, number of travellers, and specific preferences. Please get in touch for a personalised quote.

Guiding:

Rather than travelling with a dedicated lead guide, you’ll be looked after by local birding and safari guides at each camp, all of whom know their patch inside out. They’re especially good with families and will adjust the pace and content of each outing to suit your daughter’s interests and energy levels.
