Wild Ghana: Picathartes & Forest Endemics

per person

From the misty canopy of Kakum to the mossy boulders of a hidden Picathartes nesting site, this compact yet thrilling birding tour dives deep into Ghana’s richest forest ecosystems. Designed for birders with a passion for Upper Guinea endemics and a focus on quality over quantity, this 7-day adventure offers some of the best forest birding in West Africa — and the rare chance to see one of the continent’s most extraordinary species, the Yellow-headed Picathartes.

We begin just outside Accra, heading straight into the lush Upper Guinea forests of the Atewa Range — one of Ghana’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Here, we target canopy and understorey specialities such as Tit Hylia, Blue-moustached Bee-eater, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, and Yellow-footed Honeyguide.

From Atewa, we continue to Bobiri Forest and Butterfly Sanctuary, a compact but bird-rich patch home to Long-tailed Hawk, African Piculet, and a variety of greenbuls, flycatchers, and sunbirds. The day culminates with a visit to one of West Africa’s most iconic birding locations — a nesting colony of Yellow-headed Picathartes (White-necked Rockfowl). Watching these prehistoric-looking birds return to roost is an unforgettable experience and a major highlight of the tour.

We then spend three days exploring Kakum National Park and its surrounding forests. Dawn walks along the canopy walkway offer outstanding chances to observe forest hornbills, Congo Serpent Eagle, and a dazzling mix of sunbirds, barbets, and bee-eaters. From the forest interior to the coastal edge habitats of Brenu Beach Road, this compact itinerary delivers an exceptional variety of Upper Guinea endemics and sought-after West African specialities — all within a week.
