Rwanda Birding Tours

Breathtaking Landscapes, Albertine Rift Specials & World-Class Birding in the Heart of Africa

Rwanda Birding Tours

Known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, Rwanda offers a stunningly scenic backdrop for birdwatching and is fast gaining recognition as a top birding tour destination in East Africa. From its misty montane forests and volcanoes to expansive wetlands and savannahs, Rwanda’s diverse landscapes support an impressive range of bird species.

With over 700 bird species recorded, including many Albertine Rift endemics and regional specials, our Rwanda birding tours offer access to some of the continent’s most exciting habitats — all within a compact and easily navigable country. Whether you’re chasing lifers or simply enjoying the thrill of discovery, Rwanda is a birding destination not to be overlooked.

The ancient rainforest of Nyungwe National Park is a key highlight on many of our Rwanda birdwatching holidays, home to sought-after species such as Rwenzori Turaco, Red-collared Babbler, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, and Purple-breasted Sunbird. Up north, Volcanoes National Park delivers more high-elevation forest birding against a breathtaking volcanic backdrop.

In stark contrast, the open grasslands, lakes and wetlands of Akagera National Park offer superb lowland birding. This is the best place to spot species like Shoebill, Papyrus Gonolek, and Blue-headed Coucal, while also enjoying Rwanda’s rewilded big game — including lion, elephant and giraffe — making Akagera an excellent addition to any birding safari.

Our Rwanda birding trips are fully tailor-made, designed around your target species, photography goals, or travel preferences. With expert local guides and carefully chosen lodges, we create seamless, rewarding birding experiences across Rwanda’s finest habitats.

A typical 10-day tour can yield over 350 bird species, and with Rwanda’s excellent road network, you’ll spend more time birding and less time in transit. It’s a smooth, scenic and surprisingly accessible country to travel in.

For birders looking to explore somewhere different — with spectacular scenery, rich biodiversity, and excellent guiding — our Rwanda birding tours are a perfect choice.

When to Visit Rwanda for Birding

Rwanda offers excellent birding throughout the year, making it an ideal destination for both short breaks and longer Rwanda birding holidays. The best time to visit for forest birding is during the dry seasons, particularly from June to September, when conditions are comfortable and access to trails is easy.

A second dry window from mid-December to February also offers superb birding, with clear skies and more active birds, especially in Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park.

That said, the green seasons (March–May and October–November) are also productive for Rwanda birding tours, particularly in Akagera’s wetlands and savannahs. Many forest species are more vocal during the rains, which can improve sightings. Just be prepared for muddy trails and occasional showers.

If you’re unsure when to travel, we’re happy to advise based on your specific target list or photography goals.

    Sustainability & Citizen Science

At Wild Birding, we’re committed to offering meaningful Rwanda birdwatching holidays that contribute to conservation and benefit local communities. We work exclusively with Rwandan guides, drivers, and community-run lodges, ensuring your trip supports the people and ecosystems of this beautiful country.

All our Rwanda birding tours encourage daily checklist sharing on eBird — helping contribute to vital long-term monitoring of bird populations in the Albertine Rift and beyond.

We also offer a bespoke carbon scoring and offsetting service. Just ask us to calculate the environmental footprint of your itinerary, and we’ll help you offset it in a meaningful way.

We’re proud supporters of the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the ongoing rewilding efforts in Akagera National Park. When you travel with Wild Birding, you’re not just ticking species — you’re helping protect the habitats they depend on.

What to Bring on Your Rwanda Birding Trip

Rwanda’s varied altitudes and microclimates mean packing thoughtfully is important. In Nyungwe and Volcanoes, it can be cool and damp, while Akagera is warmer and drier.

    We recommend:

    • Lightweight, breathable clothing for warm days
    • Warm layers for early mornings and higher elevations
    • Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, especially for forest trails
    • Waterproof jacket and daypack
    • Insect repellent and anti-malarial medication (especially for Akagera)
    • Sun protection: wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high SPF
    • Binoculars and camera (with zoom lens for photography)
    • Notebook or app for recording sightings (we use eBird on all our tours)

    Recommended field guides:

    • Birds of East Africa by Terry Stevenson and John Fanshawe
    • Birds of Africa South of the Sahara by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan

*As a gift, all guests booking a Rwanda birding tour of 10 days or longer receive a free field guide delivered to your door before you travel.
