India Birding Tours

Birding does not get much better than in India. The birding is spectacular, complemented by the diverse culture, food, national parks, and wildlife. At dawn you’ll be greeted by the sound of Indian Peafowls, knowing full well that you are easily going to see over 100 species on that day, along with possibly seeing a Bengal Tiger, and other exciting wildlife. It truly is like stepping into The Jungle Book, and we’re so excited to be offering birding tours in India.

India’s avian diversity is unparalleled, making it a true birdwatcher’s paradise. With over a thousand species calling this subcontinent home, including about 100 found nowhere else on Earth, India offers an astonishing array of birdlife that few countries can match.

The avifauna is a testament to India’s incredible geographic diversity. From the lush, humid evergreen forests of the north-east and south-west to the searing deserts that dominate Rajasthan’s western landscape, India encapsulates nearly every ecosystem found on our planet. This remarkable variety of habitats supports an equally diverse array of birds, each uniquely adapted to its environment.

The country’s avifauna includes both year-round residents and seasonal visitors. Every year, about 250 migratory species make their way to India, further enriching its already impressive bird checklist. These globetrotters, fleeing harsher climates elsewhere, find refuge in India’s welcoming habitats.

Join us as we uncover the very best of India’s incredible avifauna on our birding tours!

When to Visit India on a Birding Trip

Although the birding in India is outstanding throughout the year, October to April is perhaps the best time to visit India on one of our birdwatching tours. During these months, in addition to the diverse resident bird species found across the country, you can witness an impressive influx of migratory birds. A vast array of waterfowl, raptors, starlings, and other songbirds make their way to India from their breeding grounds in Europe, Central Asia, and Siberia. This seasonal migration of birds significantly enhances the birdwatching experience and the tour, as it offers the opportunity to observe species that are not typically seen during other times of the year. Consequently, the October-April window is considered the most favourable for organising birding tours and expeditions across various habitats in India.

    Weather & Climate

India has a tropical monsoon climate with wet and dry seasons. Summers (March to June) are hot and dry across most regions. The southwestern monsoon brings heavy rainfall from late May/June to September, especially in coastal areas and the Western Ghats mountains. The northeast has a subtropical climate with cooler temps and heavy rains from the northeastern monsoon. The Himalayas in the north have an alpine climate with severe winters. The Thar Desert in the northwest is arid with scorching summers and little rain. Geography like the Himalayas, deserts, and oceans influence India’s diverse climatic patterns across different regions. The monsoon season is a critical feature shaping agriculture and the economy.

    What to bring with you

When going on one of our birding tours in India, packing the right essentials is key to ensuring a comfortable and rewarding experience. Given the tropical monsoon climate, lightweight and breathable clothing is crucial. A hat is recommended to provide protection from the sun, while sturdy, comfortable footwear is essential for navigating varied terrains during our excursions. Considering the variability in temperatures across different regions and seasons, layers of clothing can be very useful. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also important for sun protection and to ward off insects. For equipment, high-quality binoculars tailored for birdwatching are indispensable. Additionally, if you have a good camera and lens, bring them along to capture the stunning birdlife. A comprehensive field guide specific to the birds of India, such as ‘Birds of the Indian Subcontinent’ by Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp and Tim Inskipp, is also highly recommended to enhance your birdwatching holiday with us.
