Republic of the Congo Birding Tours
Tucked deep in the heart of Central Africa, the Republic of the Congo remains one of the least-explored birding destinations on the continent. Dominated by the vast, unbroken rainforest of the Congo Basin and laced with countless rivers, swamps and forest clearings, this region is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife — including rare and little-known birds found nowhere else on Earth.
For experienced birders and adventurous naturalists, Congo offers a genuine sense of exploration. This is a place where few birdwatchers have ventured, and sightings still carry the thrill of discovery. The birdlife here is elusive and forest-based, with highlights including African River Martin, Hartlaub’s Duck, Forbes’s Plover, Brazza’s Martin, Congo Sunbird, White-throated Blue Swallow, and various forest hornbills, turacos, and kingfishers. There’s even the remote possibility of encountering the mythical Congo Peafowl — one of the most enigmatic species on the continent.
The Republic of the Congo’s birding is deeply tied to its rivers and rainforests. The wetlands of the Likouala and Sangha Rivers support a rich mix of waterbirds and raptors, while the surrounding forest is home to a suite of Upper Guinea and Congo Basin specials. Multi-day journeys by boat are often the best way to access these habitats, weaving through remote villages and pristine wilderness.
Beyond birds, the Congo Basin is a refuge for some of Africa’s most iconic and endangered wildlife. Forest elephants, Western Lowland Gorillas, bonobos (in the adjacent DRC), bongo antelope, and agile mangabeys all inhabit these forests — along with a range of rare mammals and reptiles that are rarely encountered elsewhere. This overlap of birds, mammals and immersive wilderness makes the Republic of the Congo uniquely suited to Wild Birding’s approach: offering trips that are as much about experience and environment as they are about species counts.
The travel here is raw, remote, and deeply rewarding. It won’t be for everyone — but for those drawn to the wilder corners of the map, the Republic of the Congo is one of the last truly untamed birding frontiers in Africa. Our small-group expeditions and private tours are carefully planned with trusted partners on the ground, allowing clients to safely and respectfully explore one of the world’s great ecological strongholds.

What Our Previous Clients Thought Of Our Kenya Birding Holidays
Wild Tanzania: Endemics of the Eastern Arc
We had a fantastic time with Isaac—an excellent bird guide and great company throughout the trip. Despite challenging weather conditions in the West Usambara Mountains, we still had a successful birding experience. While a few key species eluded us this time, it only gives us even more reason to return one day. A wonderful trip overall!
