South Africa Birding Tours
South Africa seems to have it all: incredible scenery backed up with a beautiful coastline, upmarket restaurants and facilities, and fantastic game reserves and national parks. Even more astonishingly, it has 18 regional endemic bird species, more than any other country in Africa!
Situated at the southern tip of Africa, South Africa offers a diverse landscape and rich biodiversity, making it an ideal destination for birding tours. Bordered by the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, it shares boundaries with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini, and completely encloses Lesotho. Covering approximately 1,220,000 square kilometers, it is home to around 62 million people and a wide variety of bird species that attract visitors on South Africa birding tours. Pretoria serves as the administrative capital, while Cape Town houses the Parliament and serves as the legislative capital. Johannesburg, with over six million residents, is the largest city, followed by Cape Town and Durban.
The terrain features a high plateau known as the Highveld, sloping into the Kalahari Basin to the west and north. The Great Escarpment surrounds this area, varying in altitude from 800 meters to over 3,000 meters in the Drakensberg range. A narrow coastal plain completes the landscape. This diverse topography results in varied climatic zones, from the arid southern Namib desert to lush subtropical regions along the eastern border with Mozambique.
The Bushveld region, including Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, is home to diverse wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, wildebeests, kudus, and giraffes. Nature enthusiasts flock here for unforgettable wildlife encounters. With 18 regional endemics, South Africa boasts more endemic bird species than any other country in Africa, making it one of the top birding destinations in the world (and we don’t say that lightly).
With outstanding infrastructure, incredible accommodation, excellent food, and spectacular scenery, it offers a delightful and easy birding experience for enthusiasts worldwide!

When to visit
Birding in South Africa is consistently excellent throughout the year. However, the austral summer (October to March) stands out as the peak season for birding enthusiasts, as it coincides with breeding seasons for many species and the presence of migrants. It’s worth noting, though, that this time also corresponds with the rainy season in certain areas, potentially impacting accessibility.
For those keen on observing migratory species, the austral spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) present ideal windows, as birds are either arriving or departing. Even the winter months (June to August) offer rewarding birding experiences, particularly in arid regions where vegetation is sparse, facilitating easier bird spotting. Moreover, this period provides opportunities to sight species that are more conspicuous during the cooler climate.

Weather & Climate
South Africa offers a remarkable spectrum of weather and climate, spanning diverse landscapes. In the Western Cape, encompassing renowned spots like Cape Town, a Mediterranean climate prevails. Summers bring hot, arid conditions, while winters offer cooler temperatures and increased precipitation. Cape Town enjoys temperate weather year-round, with the majority of rainfall occurring during the winter season. Along the scenic Garden Route along the southern coast, a temperate climate prevails, offering mild temperatures and significant rainfall, especially in winter.
Venturing into the Eastern Cape, the climate becomes more multifaceted. Coastal areas like Port Elizabeth enjoy temperate conditions, with moderate temperatures and rainfall spread throughout the year. Inland areas of the Eastern Cape tend to be warmer, particularly in summer, and cooler in winter, with less rainfall compared to the coast.
Furthermore, South Africa’s climatic diversity extends to its inland regions, including the Bushveld and Highveld. The Bushveld, primarily located in the northeastern region, boasts a subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Meanwhile, the Highveld, spanning much of the interior plateau, experiences a temperate continental climate with warm summers, cool winters, and occasional frost.

What to bring with you on a South Africa Birding Tour
When going on one of our birding tours in South Africa, there are several indispensable items to pack for a comfortable and fruitful experience. Firstly, appropriate attire is paramount. Given the diverse climate of South Africa, it’s essential to pack versatile layers that can be easily adjusted according to the region and season. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral hues to blend seamlessly with the environment and ensure comfort during extended periods in the field.
Moreover, don’t forget to shield yourself from the intense African sun by packing sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap, particularly during the warmer months. To deter bothersome mosquitoes and other biting insects prevalent in certain areas, consider bringing insect repellent and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing.
As for equipment, high-quality binoculars specifically designed for birdwatching are indispensable. Additionally, if you have a good camera and lens, be sure to bring them along! A comprehensive field guide focusing on the avian species of the region, such as the Field Guide to Birds of Greater Southern Africa, would be an invaluable resource during your birding tour.
*Remember that when you book a South Africa birding tour with us over 14 days, we will send you a new complementary field guide!
