Nairobi National Park Birding Tour

One Of Kenya's Best Birding Locations

Nairobi National Park Birding Tour

per person

The only national park situated inside a capital city, Nairobi National Park is a unique birding destination. Boasting over 500 species, one can easily rack up over 150 species in one day! A must for any birder visiting Nairobi.

Nairobi National Park, located on the southern outskirts of the city, is a compact yet remarkable national park in Africa. Despite its small size of 117 square kilometers, it offers a unique experience with its vast open plains contrasting against the backdrop of Nairobi’s skyline, making it the only national park bordering a capital city.

One of the park’s standout features is its exceptional diversity of birdlife. With over 520 recorded species, day tours in Nairobi National Park can provide sightings of an impressive 120 or more bird species, and on particularly favourable days, even surpass that number.

Another highlight of the park is its abundance of African big game, including the endangered black rhino, a testament to the park’s successful conservation efforts. Visitors can also expect to see lions, leopards, rhinos, hyenas, buffaloes, and giraffes, among other megafauna.

Bird count: Over 250.

Speed: Relaxed/Moderate – depending how you like to approach the day. Either get as many species as possible or simply enjoy them as they come.

Tour difficulty: Same as above. Depends on whether you want to see lots of species (twitch), or casually go birding.

When to visit: Birding in Nairobi National Park is incredible all year, but to the maximum amount of species then a visit during the short rains of November and early December is advisable. This is when many Palearctic migrants make their presence felt, so the count will be high. Additionally, this period highlights most species in vibrant breeding plumage, featuring captivating display behaviours of whydahs, widowbirds and bishops.

Sustainability: At Wild Birding, our goal is to ensure that every birding holiday we create contributes positively to bird conservation efforts and local communities. Our determination to promote sustainable travel led us to become founding members of Tourism Declares Climate Emergency. As part of this commitment, we have established the world’s pioneering carbon scoring and offsetting framework for tailor-made holidays. Feel free to request us to carbon score your individual trip!
