Best time of year:

Southern Thailand offers excellent birding opportunities year-round, but the prime time to visit is during the cooler, dry season from November to February. This period is when the weather is most comfortable for birdwatching, with lower humidity and less rainfall, providing ideal conditions for spotting a variety of species. It’s also when many of the region’s resident birds are most active, and the forests are full of breeding birds in their most vibrant plumages.

If you’re hoping to see migratory species, particularly from the Palearctic, this is the best time, as many birds make their way through the region during these months. March to May can still be good for birding, but the heat and humidity start to increase, which may affect bird activity. Avoid the rainy season (June to October) if possible, as it can be challenging for birdwatching due to heavy rain and more difficult trail conditions.

Pace:

Moderate.

Difficulty:

This tour is suitable for birders of all levels, though a moderate level of fitness is recommended. The terrain varies from flat, easy walks in the mangrove forests of Krabi to more uneven and sometimes hilly trails in the national parks. While the birding is not overly strenuous, some trails can be challenging due to the dense forest and occasional steep sections, particularly in Khao Luang and Khao Sok National Parks.

There will be some early starts and longer hours of walking, but the pace is generally relaxed, allowing time to enjoy the birds and surrounding environment. For those with mobility concerns, some sections may require a bit more effort, but the overall experience remains accessible to most. The weather, particularly during the warmer months, can also add a layer of difficulty, with higher humidity and heat, so it’s important to stay hydrated and take breaks when needed.

In short, this tour offers a comfortable yet engaging birding experience for both novice and experienced birdwatchers.

Citizen Science and Carbon Offsetting:

At Wild Birding, we are committed to supporting citizen science initiatives and reducing our environmental impact. As part of our dedication to conservation, all sightings from our tours are submitted to platforms like eBird, where they contribute to global bird monitoring efforts. By participating in this way, you’re helping to build an important dataset that tracks bird populations and migratory patterns, contributing to wildlife research and conservation projects worldwide.

In addition to our support for citizen science, we are committed to sustainable practices through carbon offsetting. We understand the impact that travel can have on the environment, which is why we offset the carbon emissions generated by our tours. A portion of the revenue from each trip goes towards supporting projects that reduce carbon emissions, such as reforestation and renewable energy initiatives.

Thailand Tour Leader:

Southern Thailand Birding Tour
Tony ‘Eagle Eye’

Hailing from Krabi Province, Tony’s passion for birds began in his childhood, when he roamed the forests with a slingshot, captivated by the songs and movements of the local birds. School instilled in him a deep respect for the natural world, particularly the importance of conserving Thailand’s rich flora and fauna, and this led him to pursue a career as a guide.

Tony’s early years as a guide focused on canoeing holidays for English and German-speaking visitors, but his true passion was always birdwatching. Despite being considered eccentric by friends for his determination to learn every detail about rare bird species—down to their Latin and English names—Tony’s perseverance paid off. By 1999, he had earned a nationally recognised guide licence and established his own business.

With years of experience, Tony now specialises in bird-watching trips across Thailand, particularly in the southern region. His well-established network allows him to expertly arrange everything from transportation to accommodations, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for his guests.

Tony’s commitment to birdwatching is matched by his love for bird photography. His extensive knowledge spans not just bird names, but also their calls, songs, habitats, and behaviours. From his early days exploring the forests of Krabi to his current role as a seasoned guide, Tony’s journey reflects a lifelong connection to Thailand’s avian wonders and his passion for sharing this with bird enthusiasts worldwide.
