Seychelles Birding Tours

Island Endemics, Seabird Spectacles & Birding in Paradise

Seychelles Birding Tours

Remote, beautiful, and ecologically unique, the Seychelles archipelago is a dream destination for birders. This Indian Ocean paradise is home to some of the world’s rarest birds, offering exceptional opportunities to see island endemics, vast seabird colonies, and species found nowhere else on earth.

Our Seychelles birding tours take you to the heart of this biodiversity hotspot, exploring key islands like Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Cousin, Aride and the Aldabra Atoll (on longer trips). Whether you’re looking for ultra-rare endemics or a relaxing tropical birdwatching escape, the Seychelles delivers both in abundance.

With just 42 resident breeding bird species, the Seychelles may seem modest at first glance — but nearly half of these are found nowhere else on earth. The Seychelles Magpie-Robin, once considered the world’s rarest bird, has made a dramatic recovery. Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher, Aldabra Drongo, Seychelles Warbler, and Seychelles Scops Owl are all top targets, alongside dazzling white terns, noddies, tropicbirds and frigatebirds.

The uninhabited islands and nature reserves are astonishingly rich in seabirds. Aride Island alone holds one of the largest seabird colonies in the Indian Ocean, with hundreds of thousands of Lesser Noddies, Sooty Terns, Tropicbirds, and Brown Noddies nesting in close view.

Our Seychelles birdwatching holidays are tailored to your interests — whether you’re keen on endemics, photography, or simply birding in beautiful surroundings. The scenery is every bit as spectacular as the birds, with granite peaks, lush palm forests, and turquoise waters making every moment unforgettable.

Getting around the islands is part of the fun — you’ll travel by boat, light aircraft, or even ox-cart on La Digue. And because distances are short, you can combine excellent birding with snorkelling, beach time, or relaxed exploration.

Seychelles is ideal for birders looking to combine serious species with a relaxed pace. Many guests pair a Seychelles birding trip with time in Madagascar or mainland East Africa.

Our Kenya Birding Tours

Tailor-made Seychelles Birding Tours

At Wild Birding, all of our Seychelles birding tours are tailor-made. We don’t run fixed group departures — instead, we create private, custom-designed trips based on what you want to see, how you like to travel, and how much time you have.

Whether you’re after the full sweep of Seychelles endemics, interested in seabird colonies and island hopping, or want to combine relaxed birdwatching with time on the beach, we’ll build the perfect itinerary for you.

Our expert local guides work closely with conservation organisations on the islands, giving you access to restricted areas and the best chances of seeing rarities like Seychelles Scops Owl, Seychelles Magpie-Robin, or Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher. For keen photographers, we time visits to coincide with active breeding colonies or good light conditions on scenic trails.

We take care of all the logistics — boats, flights, transfers, permits — so you can focus entirely on the birds. Just tell us your goals, and we’ll make your dream Seychelles birdwatching holiday a reality.

When to Visit Seychelles for Birding

Seychelles offers fantastic birding year-round, but the best time to visit depends on your focus.

  • April to May and September to October are ideal for seeing breeding seabirds, active landbirds, and clear weather for photography.
  • October to December is prime time for migrant shorebirds, especially on Aldabra and the outer islands.
  • The Seychelles Scops Owl is more reliably seen between June and November, though sightings are possible year-round with the right guide and conditions.
  • Breeding activity among seabirds peaks in April–July, particularly on Aride and Cousin islands.
  • The southeast trade wind season (May to September) brings breezier weather and rougher seas — some outer islands may be harder to reach during this time, but birding remains excellent on Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.

We’ll advise on the best time to travel based on your personal wish list and style of travel.

Sustainability & Citizen Science

The Seychelles is one of the world’s most important island biodiversity hotspots, and bird tourism plays a key role in its protection. At Wild Birding, our Seychelles birding tours directly support conservation through park fees, reserve access contributions, and partnerships with local NGOs.

Many of the endemic birds you’ll encounter — like the Seychelles Warbler or Seychelles Magpie-Robin — have been brought back from the brink of extinction through sustained conservation efforts. By visiting these islands, you’re helping to safeguard their future.

We encourage all our guests to log daily sightings on eBird and share photos with conservation partners on the ground. We also offer a carbon scoring and offsetting service for your international flights and island transfers, helping you reduce the footprint of your journey.

Our tours are designed to be low-impact, high-value, and conservation-positive — exactly what sustainable travel should be.

What to Bring on Your Seychelles Birding Trip

Given Seychelles’ tropical climate and island terrain, we recommend packing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for warm and humid conditions
  • Sun protection: high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with grip for trails and boat landings
  • Insect repellent (especially for visits to forested islands)
  • Binoculars and camera – most birds are quite approachable, making it great for photography
  • Swimwear and snorkelling gear (optional, though many lodges provide it)
  • Waterproof dry bag or zip-locks for cameras and optics during boat rides

Recommended field guides:

  • Birds of Seychelles by Adrian Skerrett, Ian Sinclair & Tony Disley
  • Birds of the Indian Ocean Islands by Ian Sinclair & Olivier Langrand (for broader coverage)
