An Astonishing 10% of the World's Bird Species Are Found in Thailand

Thailand Birding Tours

Thailand is a must-visit destination for bird enthusiasts, offering an extraordinary blend of rich birdlife, stunning landscapes, and cultural wonders. With an impressive 939 bird species, including two endemics—the Turquoise-throated Barbet and Rufous Limestone-babbler—this Southeast Asian gem accounts for a remarkable 10% of the world’s bird species.

Positioned at the crossroads of major migratory flyways, Thailand provides birders with the rare chance to see vibrant resident species alongside Palearctic and Himalayan migrants. From lush tropical rainforests and coastal mudflats to limestone cliffs and serene wetlands, the variety of habitats ensures every outing is packed with opportunities to add to your life list.

Beyond the incredible birding, Thailand’s legendary hospitality, exquisite cuisine, and excellent yet affordable accommodation create an unforgettable experience. It’s no wonder this captivating country is considered one of Asia’s premier birding destinations.

    When to visit Thailand

Thailand offers an exceptional birding experience year-round, making it a top destination for birders no matter the time of year. While the peak season runs from November to March, there’s truly no bad time to visit.

During the peak season, birders can enjoy the sight of vibrant breeding plumages and witness fascinating display behaviours, especially among resident species. It’s also the prime time for observing migratory birds, bringing an abundance of species and great opportunities for a high species count.

However, don’t overlook the off-peak months, as they also offer extraordinary birding opportunities. Thailand’s diverse habitats, from lush rainforests to wetlands and mountains, support an impressive variety of species throughout the year, with each season bringing its own unique sightings.

For those seeking up-to-date information on current sightings, eBird (a tool we regularly use on our tours) provides live checklists and sightings, helping you plan accordingly. Rest assured, no matter when you choose to join us for a birding tour in Thailand, you’re guaranteed a rewarding and memorable experience.

    Citizen Science & Carbon Offsetting

At Wild Birding, we are committed to ensuring that every birding holiday we offer has a positive impact on both bird conservation efforts and the local communities in the areas we visit. Our focus on sustainability is reflected in our active engagement with citizen science through eBird, where we contribute to the global birdwatching community by tracking and sharing sightings to aid research and conservation.

We encourage all our clients to make use of eBird’s platform during their trips to Thailand, adding to real-time data and helping monitor bird populations and migration patterns. By submitting checklists and participating in citizen science, you play a crucial role in supporting bird conservation efforts.

In addition to our commitment to citizen science, we have implemented a carbon scoring and offsetting framework for all of our tours. We offer our clients the option to request a carbon score for their individual trips, allowing them to understand and mitigate the environmental impact of their travel. Through this initiative, we aim to promote sustainable tourism practices, raise awareness about reducing carbon footprints, and offset emissions through verified schemes.

By choosing Wild Birding for your Thailand birding adventure, you are not only embarking on an unforgettable journey to witness the country’s incredible birdlife, but also actively supporting conservation and sustainable travel practices that help protect both the environment and local communities.

    What to bring with you?

For your birding tour in Thailand, pack light, breathable clothing for warmer regions, and layers for cooler areas like Doi Inthanon or Khao Yai National Park. Neutral colours are ideal for blending in with the environment. Insect repellent is essential, and anti-malarial medication is recommended for areas with higher malaria risk. Sun protection, including a wide-brimmed hat and high SPF sunscreen, is also necessary due to Thailand’s strong sun.

Comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must for uneven trails, and waterproof boots are recommended for wet conditions. Bring binoculars with at least 8x magnification, and a camera with a zoom lens if you plan to photograph birds. A field guide, such as “Birds of Thailand” by Craig Robson, will help you identify species. Stay hydrated with a refillable water bottle and bring personal medications, as well as a small first aid kit.

A lightweight day pack will help carry your essentials, and snacks for long days will keep you energised. If staying in remote areas, consider a mosquito net for added protection at night.

*As a bonus, when you book a Thailand birding tour with us, we’ll send you a complimentary birding checklist to help you get the most out of your trip!
